Modernism Part II

With modern man
comes needless death

Let me be clear:

I know I must be clever
since I'm still fucking here

And where are you now?
my once-friend,
my gentle man?
Where are you now?

Godless, I understood you once
and godless, I understand you now
sail away, my ghostly whisper
safe travels; I hear your laughter

Freedom in youth
to be a bastard
freedom, sweet youth
to never forget
each time I said I loved you
each time I held you to me
and each time I never had you
and each time you truly knew me

It was truth
it was truth
and if I could do it all over
I'd bar my foolish pride
and been more honest with you

So I say now:
Safe travels, my once-friend
safe travels, my not-so-gentleman
rest now, your weary bones done
rest now, your diamond mind's end
